School of Biological Sciences head Professor Gillian Lewis has been appointed to the seven-member board of the Crown Research Institute NIWA, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. NIWA was established in 1992 and although owned by the New Zealand Government, operates as a stand-alone company with a high degree of independence.

Prof Lewis has a PhD in microbiology from the University of Otago and a background in in freshwater and environmental sciences. She expects that her background in freshwater and environmental sciences “will further strengthen the research understanding on the board”.
