The School of Biological Sciences offers a number of scholarships and awards to both undergraduate and PhD students.

Scholarships and prizes specifically targeted to students of Biological Sciences (SBS) can be found below.

  • One annual prize awarded to the best stage 2 student. Awarded by the school. No application required.
  • The Frances Briggs Bursary Senior for a stage 3 Plant Sciences student.
  • The Frances Briggs Bursary Junior for a stage 2 Plant Sciences student.
  • The R. Morrison Cassie Prize for a Biometry student. Awarded by the school.
  • The R.E.F. Matthews Prize for the best student paper on Cellular & Molecular Biology published in the previous year.
  • The T.L. Lancaster Memorial Prize for the best report on indigenous flora and/or vegetation. Biennial award made by the school.
  • The Janet Bain McKay Memorial Scholarship for an outstanding Plant Sciences student intending to advance to MSc. Awarded by the school. Candidate may apply.
  • The Marian Cranwell Prize is awarded on school recommendation for the best thesis on an environmental or ecological subject. For MSc or PhD students.
  • The Frances Barkley Scholarship for a first-year BSc student of Māori or Pacific Island descent majoring in Biological Sciences. Awarded by the Faculty of Science at enrolment. Application required by student.
