This is a large and diverse family with groups of sporangia (sori) most frequently protected by the inrolled leaflet margin forming a false indusium (cover). There are five genera in New Zealand.

Adiantum hispidulum, rosy maidenhair fern - Repeated forking of a frond produces a broad fan-like form up to 30 cm long. Widespread in the northern half of the North Island in exposed areas. Easy to cultivate in full sun to light shade. Adiantum aethiopicum, one frond - The ultimate segments of this attractive frond have the fan-shape that is typical of many members of this genus. Found throughout the country. Anogramma leptophylla, Jersey fern, annual fern - A small fern with 3-9 cm long fonds and fan-shaped leaflets that dies at the end of the growing season. Next season's growth arises from the tiny gamete-forming plant (gametophyte) that persists from year to year. Found in eastern areas from the Poor Knights to Dunedin.
