Brake ferns 2: Maidenhair fern and annual fern

Adiantum hispidulum, rosy maidenhair fern - Repeated forking of a frond produces a broad fan-like form up to 30 cm long. Widespread in the northern half of the North Island in exposed areas. Easy to cultivate in full sun to light shade.

Adiantum hispidulum, lower frond surface - In Adiantum species portions of the leaflet margin roll over each sorus to form a kidney-shaped cover known as a false indusium. In this species, hairs are present on the lower leaf surface and false indusium. (photo, Larry Jensen)

Adiantum aethiopicum, one frond - The ultimate segments of this attractive frond have the fan-shape that is typical of many members of this genus. Found throughout the country. (photo, Larry Jensen)

Anogramma leptophylla, Jersey fern, annual fern - A small fern with 3-9 cm long fonds and fan-shaped leaflets that dies at the end of the growing season. Next season's growth arises from the tiny gamete-forming plant (gametophyte) that persists from year to year. Found in eastern areas from the Poor Knights to Dunedin.
